Chemical Properties

11H-Benzo[a]carbazole presents as a yellow to greenish-yellow crystalline powder with a sharp melting point at 266°C and a boiling point of approximately 456°C.Its density is 1.277 g/cm³,and it has a high estimated refractive index of 1.8230.The flash point is 208°C.It is stable for storage at room temperature. The compound shows slight water solubility but is readily soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO),DMF,and hot ethanol, with moderate solubility in ethyl acetate and chloroform. The conjugated planar fused-ring system is chemically stable but may undergo photochemical degradation upon prolonged exposure to intense UV radiation.

Description

11H-Benzo[a]carbazole(CAS No.239-01-0)is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH)consisting of a carbazole fused with an additional benzene ring. This planar,π-extended structure is of significant interest in environmental chemistry as a trace pollutant and in materials science as a model compound for studying the photophysics of nitrogen-containing PAHs.

Uses

1.Standard for PAH Analysis in Environmental Samples
Used as a certified reference material and internal standard in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)for the quantitative analysis of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic compounds in soil, air particulate matter, and smoked food products.

2.Electron-Transporting Host in Red PHOLEDs
Employed as an electron-transport and host material in red phosphorescent OLEDs(PHOLEDs).Its suitable HOMO/LUMO levels facilitate electron injection and exciton confinement on red-emitting iridium complexes, contributing to devices with high efficiency and low driving voltage.

3.Charge-Transfer Complex Former
Forms stable, deeply colored charge-transfer(CT)complexes with strong electron acceptors like tetracyanoquinodimethane(TCNQ).These complexes exhibit electrical conductivity and are studied as model systems for organic semiconductors in fundamental solid-state physics research.

4.Fluorescence Probe for Micropolarity
Its fluorescence spectrum is highly sensitive to the polarity of the local environment. It is embedded in polymer matrices to create sensor films for monitoring the curing degree of epoxy resins or the hydration process in cement-based materials by tracking spectral shifts.
